Welcome to Willow Bridge Books!
"A book is a gift you can open again and again." Garrison Keillor

Willow Bridge Books is an independent bookstore located in Oakhurst, California. Nestled between the scenic landscapes of the San Joaquin Valley and Yosemite National Park, the bookstore services the communities of Madera and Mariposa counties.

According to the owner, Monica McClanahan, "individual bookstores cannot survive unless they become deeply involved in the community." Willow Bridge Books's goal is to become a dynamic part of the community and to serve as a 'bridge' between our rural communities and the outside literary and artistic world.

Willow Bridge Books holds the charm of a village shop, with the depth and breadth of the most sophisticated New York emporium. says Chris Stanton, author of Jubilee. "But neither of these is their strongest virtue...that would be the attentive staff and local patrons that give it its' heart."

Take a look at the Bookstore People website where they write about bookstores, review books and discuss literary topics. Be sure to enter Willow Bridge Books into their search and see what they have to say about our store.

Title of Event: Kathleen Mattox & Julie Mitchell, artists
When: Saturday, July 11, 2009 2:00 PM
Location: Willow Bridge Books
Description: Kathleen Mattox is a local artist from Sanger, California. She painted while in college at Fresno State in the 1960’s and has been part of many creative endeavors over the last 30+ years. She took classes in watercolor, acrylic, oil, and fabric arts and finally returned to watercolor in 2000, after not painting for over 30 years. Most of her works begin with watercolor and incorporates other media such as permanent pen, gel pen, textured paper, magazine photos and more. In addition to loving a lot of color, she is especially drawn to the elements of line and texture and very aware of the power of contrasting values in effective paintings. Most of her works are large, usually full sheet watercolors. She has recently begun to further explore acrylics, oils, and soft pastels and to incorporate them into her current watermedia paintings. She finds herself most drawn to mixed media works and experimental collages. Wanting her works to be fun for herself and her viewers, she experiments with new subjects, ideas, and processes. Her subject matter tends to be impressionistic, expressionistic, and/or abstract rather than realistic. She likes to work in series, returning to the same subjects over time. In Oakhurst, Kathleen’s works can currently be seen at Timberline Gallery and Willowbridge Books. She is a charter member and signature member of the Alliance of California Artists and belongs to the San Diego Watercolor Society, Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society, and the California Watercolor Association.

Julie Mitchell is a mixed medium fiber artist. She has been making Spirit Figures since 2002 when she attended a goddess doll workshop. Julie says she likes to think he Spirit Figures carry Spirit as well as form. They have one of a kind clay faces while the bodies are generally soft. Each is customized with the perfect embellishments that Julie finds, creates and gathers, often painting or dying the fabric herself. The figures are her passion and believes each is created for someone special and that there will be recognition when they come together. Her work can be seen at the Timberline Gallery or she’d be happy to create a commissioned piece just for you.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
by Kingsolver, Barbara, Kingsolver, Camille
“Tracing the food year, Kingsolver—with her characteristic candor, poetry, and grace—brings us meditations on asparagus, turkeys, tomatoes, and mulch as she and her family try to eat locally as much as they can. This is a distinct hybrid of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Under the Tuscan Sun, and Walden.” —Matt Plies, Annie Bloom’s Books, Portland, OR

Quote of the Day

"Books are the best of things, well used; abused, among the worst. What is the right use? What is the one end which all means go to effect? They are for nothing but to inspire."
